Recaro concept seat for the business class
Schwaebisch Hall, Germany. The “Phantom” prototype presented by Recaro Aircraft Seating at the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2009 in Hamburg demonstrates the options in the business class – from ultimate passenger comfort to more space for airlines.
The new prototype is based on the Recaro Comfort Line 6510 seat that features outstanding variability. A touch of a button on the remote control handset transforms the ergonomically formed seat into a flat bed measuring approximately two meters in length. The design of the privacy shell ensures the seat position can be changed without disturbing surrounding passengers.
"For our concept seat we refined the Recaro kinematics to take full advantage of all the options," says Recaro Aircraft Seating CEO Axel Kahsnitz. "We turned the ‘Phantom’ into a 180° full-flat with a perfectly horizontal surface." The seat features various preprogrammed adjustment settings for seat cushion height and backrest angle. It can also be adjusted to any other sitting or sleeping position with seat memory settings. Intelligent details include a legrest with a special overload function to prevent damage to this module.
The “Phantom” prototype also includes a concept for positioning the seats in the cabin. Instead of being placed side by side, the seats are arranged in a staggered pattern facing the front of the aircraft. This ensures that all passengers enjoy the same level of comfort. Axel Kahsnitz explains: "Since passengers are not sitting right next to each other they can enjoy a little more privacy. Despite the staggered placement of the seats, passengers can still use the comfort position to talk face-to-face.”
The space gained by staggering the seat positions and reducing the seat width makes it possible, for example, to install seven across seat configurations in a Boeing 787 instead of the usual six-across arrangement. "This enables airlines to use cabin space more efficiently," says Kahsnitz.
